About the Model Horse
When you think about model horses, you probably think of Breyers, or other toy plastic horses. These mass produced plastic horses are fun, but they represent a tiny portion of the model horse world. Most model horses have been sculpted by an independent artist, and cast into runs of 25-100+ pieces. They can be made of resin, porcelain or china, and are individually painted by artists in either acrylics, oils, pastels, watercolors, or a mixture of mediums. Many models come unpainted and unprepped, straight from the casting. Others are prepped and painted, or have customized bodies. These horses range in size from micro-mini (smaller than a quarter) to large traditional (15"x 18"), and everywhere in between. The best size for adding detail and display is the traditional size of 9"x12". The prices of individual unpainted models is determined by the number produced, the detail and size of the the sculpture, and the demand. While most molds have been created by individual artists, many people prefer to customize a mass produced plastic, such as a Breyer or Peter Stone horse. This technique is a more wallet-friendly way to create a unique model.
The Model Horse as a Portrait
Model horses can capture the personality, spirit, and movement of horses as beautiful and unique art pieces. Customizing the right model can truly bring the spirit of your horse to your shelf. The model horse portrait is meant to capture the spirit of your horse, and is perfect for a display piece, an unforgettable present, or as a tribute. Any horse can be created; warmbloods and arabs, polo ponies and jumpers, childrens ponies and Olympic horses. Real horses, or imaginary horses; the possibilities are endless, and the results are timeless.

The Process
The process begins with finding the right model horse. Using pictures of your horse, I will create a list of possible models that fit your horse's build, discipline, and personality. I offer customized plastics, as well as artist resins. Body customizing is available on the model of your choosing. Once you decide on a model, you will choose between several of the best artists in the business. When the customizations and painting is finished, you can have the horse mounted on a hardwood display base of your choosing, or even add an engraved plaque. You can also commission me to make a bridle, saddle, halter, ribbons, or other custom items.
From finding the right model, to customizing, painting, mounting and engraving, the process takes about four months.A reservation for this service also automatically entitles you to one of my custom tack slots.
